X is a variable.
Set X to equal 1.
X = 1.
This is an equation. What you do to one side, you do to another side. Such as
X²=1
You can also subtract from both sides, as in
X²-1 = 1-1
You can perform operations, like factoring... into the FOIL method. Infact X² - 1 is the difference of 2 squares... so you can factor them into
(X+1)(X-1) = 1-1
You can also divide to both sides. Like in
(X+1)*(X-1)/(X-1) = (1-1)/(X-1)
You can also simplify one or both sides independantly from one another, as in
X+1 = 0/anything
You can also plug in variables, and the equation is still true. This is basic maths.
1 + 1 = 0
