PostSubject: Computers... suck.   Thu Jun 27, 2013 10:50 pm

Oh wtf...

so as many of you know I was trying to install 2 gigs of ram into my computer the other day, didn't work and had to settle for 1.5 gig...

So I did an experiment today, thinking I'd try it one time, if it didn't work, to hell with it, if it did, great.

This is the result.

I don't understand. I simply do not understand.

I also don't understand why windows increased the size of my page file to 4 gig after I told it to decide for itself...

So I take it that the PC recognized the ram after we did the bios update? That's a valid amount for 2gb of ram.

Also, the page file is system managed, meaning the pc will allot what it wants for page file (virtual ram) unless you specify otherwise. To change this, right-click "my computer", select properties. Go to the Advanced tab, and select "performance". From there, check the radial button for "best performance". Lastly, click the advanced tab in this menu, make sure the PC is set for performance, then click the "change" button under virtual memory. Here you'll have the option to set the page file to whatever you want. Once you click OK and accept all the changes, Windows will prompt you to reboot.

I used to have it manually set to 3000 MB, but under storms recommendation I let windows decide after determining that 3000 was too much... apparently windows wanted more... considering I havei t capped at 4000 MB...

The page file is determined not just by the ram or the amount of hard drive space, but also goes hand in hand with the speed of your processor. If the processor is slow, then windows will allocate more page file to compensate for long load times.

My windows 2000.

Aprox 37 Gigs hard drive ram.
Both this, and my current desktop have floppy disk readers.
Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Version 200(?)
754 MB Ram. (It has 4 sticks in it mind you.)
Pnetium 3 CPU 1.4 GHz.

Now horse, to correct your ram issue. Certain motherboards only read so much ram, you probably either A. got the wrong type of ram. Or B. your motherboard can't handle more than what you have.

Computer's aren't plug and play with this kind of thing, there are limits.

And, that pentium 4 can be clocked up to 2.0 or even 2.2 Ghz before you need to start with cooling it.
